NOTES: Southwest of Gunnison, the popular Hartmans Rocks area has a 20+ mile network of trails and jeep roads. It consists of 160 acres at the Base Area managed by the City and County of Gunnison as well as an adjacent 8,000 acres of federal land managed by the BLM. This area receives heavy visitation by a variety of recreationists including hikers, mountain bikers, horseback riders, skiers, and ATV riders.
From the large parking area, the broad Hartmans Rocks formation is right in front of you. The trail wind up several routes through the rocks to the summit and down the back side. Continuing southwest, the trails and jeep roads wind long the broad mesa through desert sage and scrub with vistas to the south of the San Juan mountains. While the trails are constantly changing, it’s a good idea to start with a map.
To reach the trailhead from Gunnison, head west on US50 to Gold Basin Road (BLM 3062). Turn left heading south on Gold Basin Road for 3 miles to the signed parking area on the right.
